Five Minutes On Sunday: The Grocery List That Decides Your Whole Week

You do not have a free Sunday afternoon for meal prep. Nobody does. But you have five minutes to write a list, and the list is doing most of the work anyway.

Every plan I have ever seen collapse on a Wednesday was already lost on the Sunday.

Not because the person skipped a two hour meal prep session. Because they walked into a store hungry, on a Tuesday, with no list, and bought a week that could not support what they said they wanted.

You do not need a free Sunday afternoon. You need five minutes and a piece of paper.

The five minute version

Sit down before you shop. Set a timer if you have to. Write four lines.

  1. Protein for five dinners. One or two choices, not five. Chicken thighs and ground turkey will carry a whole week and they are usually the cheapest thing on the shelf.
  2. Breakfast for five mornings. Eggs and oats. Buy the whole week in one go so there is no morning where the answer is nothing.
  3. Two vegetables you will actually eat. Not the ones you feel you should buy. The ones that will not rot in the drawer while you feel guilty at them.
  4. Two snacks that are not a decision. Fruit and something with protein. If a snack needs preparing at 3pm, it will lose to whatever is in the vending machine.

That is the list. Four lines, five minutes, and you have removed roughly twenty separate food decisions from your week before the week starts.

Why the list beats the prep

Meal prep is great. It is also the first thing to go the moment life gets loud, and then people treat that as evidence they cannot do this.

The list is different. It survives a bad week, because it costs five minutes and happens before you are tired. And what is in your kitchen on Monday morning decides more about your Thursday than any amount of willpower on Thursday will.

Discipline is not doing the hard thing at the hard moment. It is arranging the week so the hard moment shows up less often.

If you want the list already written

The free 5 Day Budget Nutrition Guide on this site is exactly this, done for you: five days of meals with a checkable grocery list that runs about sixty to seventy five dollars, plus a one hour Sunday prep system for the weeks where you do have the time.

Take the list. Use it once. Then write your own next Sunday.

Five minutes. That is the whole ask.
